The Best Cleaning Method

by Joe Vitale on July 11, 2007

I’m sleepy here in San Diego but I’ve noticed a trend with the critics of my latest book, Zero Limits.

They seem to object that there is only one cleaning method revealed in the book, and that to learn more you have to attend a seminar.

I want to say that the most powerful cleaning method I know of is the one in the book.

You don’t need another one.

The one in the book is what Dr. Hew Len used to help heal that entire ward of mentally ill criminals.

He’s been using it for 25 years now.

The one in the book is what I use all the time, every day, even right now, as I type this.

Again, you don’t need anything more. The book was written as an entertaining story to convey the one method in self i-dentity ho’oponopono that I believe is the single most important one to use.

And again, if you want more, attend a seminar. Dr. Hew Len and I will do a Zero Limits one in Maui in December. He offers them on ho’oponopono all the time.

But all you really need is what’s in the book.

I have to admit when reading the introduction I felt a little bummed that you said that the practices were “secret” and one must attend a seminar. I almost felt like, well, why should I read the book at all?

But then I thought about it more.

Pastors go to seminary in order to learn the very sacred knowledge of the Bible so that they may reverently administer the sacraments (like baptism – hmm, a lot like “cleaning” wouldn’t you say?) The general parishioners don’t do this, they instead desire a special person who has perhaps a more comprehensive knowledge of the Word to do so.

Does it mean we have to go to seminary to pray? No! A child who cannot read yet can pray, can talk to God.

We then go to church to hear more about God. Now here is where people get tripped up. I think they resent the idea that a seminar might cost them money, whereas a church does it on a non-profit basis. This is perhaps as far as my metaphor can go, but I’m also reminded of what physicians and therapists do. They help, they heal, and we are required to pay for their services. Universities require you to pay tuition for the knowledge we seek. I’m a music teacher, and I get paid for my knowledge and abilities. I could go on.

My own point mainly is, the practice of Ho’oponopono I’m seeing is so different than anything else you’ve created. It delves into the realm of the sacred, and therefore SHOULD probably only be taught by masters in controlled circumstances. I am certain you wouldn’t have pursued writing this book if Dr. Len hadn’t agreed to spend extended periods of time with you. He would also have cautioned you to not do it if he felt you were the inappropriate person to do this.

As you point out, the simple “I love you, I’m sorry, Please forgive Me, Thank you” is the basis on which the practice is founded, that much I gather now. The rest of the pieces can fall into place via inspiration. That’s where the benefits are, correct?

It doesn’t cost anything at all. It only asks you to clean the negativities from oneself. There can be no possible wrong with that.

Thank you.

Then if this method can help a ward of criminals then why not do it again and have it clinically documented so it will be unequivocally clear that this method can really help those who are challenged or mentally ill whether in jail or elsewhere.

AG,

One of the things i have noticed over the years of doing therapy and coaching is that there are certain people…who no matter what you prove to them are never satisfied and want more proof.
They want tests and documentation etc etc.

What i found out was that it is nothing more than a ruse to keep themselves from taking action and finding out for themselves.

AG..in the years it would take to do all those studies…you could find out for yourself if it is useful and works…that is if you gave it an honest try.

Doing tests and other documentation insures you years of inaction and the ability to say this is why i don’t believe…and until someone can prove it in the way i need proof…it doens’t work

I find it amazing how people can build prisons for themselves with their beliefs…complain about the world they live in…and then when someone shows them a way that others have said works well…that they choose the fear of their own prison…over the fear of trying something new….the fear of the known…compared to the fear of the unknown

It is too simple for some. So many have the belief that if it is worth it…it must be hard and how dare you show me an easy way…..why all my beliefs and arguements are invested in it having to be hard …if not impossible

Joe, how dare you show me something that is this easy…what about my investment?

AG…it really is that easy…and you can prove it to yourself by using the process.
and AG…the only proof anyone ever believes is their own

Give it a go…we will be cleaning on you!

Can’t wait to meet you both. Marion

Mark,
I find AG’s request to be a reasonable one.
Do you know how many “cures”, religions, theories, books, and charlatans are out there?
Are you going to try everything that comes your way?
Would you have the time to do so?
Did you know that glow in the dark underwear imbedded with radium was popular in the 1920’s?
Yeah, why don’t we try it ourselves…
Let’s also try growth hormone, and every new diet that hits the market.
Look, if something is so evident and works so well, it shouldn’t be a problem to produce irrefutable evidence.
As a matter of fact, the mental ward “evidence” begs several questions.
Why not to heal whole towns? The world?
BTW…I tried the clearing myself and it’s rather calming.
Miraculous? No.

Joe,

I LOOOOVE “Zero Limits”. The minute I received it in the mail I devoured it. It almost left me wanting more. Hmmmmm . . . maybe I’ll signup for a Ho’oponopono seminar with Dr. Hew Len.

I will say that I found myself wondering . . . “hmm, is that all there is to it?” I’ve been cleaning Ho’oponopono style for the past few months, way before the book came out. I will tell you the immediate effect I noticed is that everyone I bumped into in the entertainment industry all of a sudden had their projects taking off. It was bizarre to me. And I knew it surpassed coincidence.

I had a friend call me upset that I was moving out of town 250 miles South. I just kept cleaning even though she thought I was a loser for leaving and giving up. 2 hours later she calls back and sets up a going away party.

Those are a couple of examples of smaller results I have used from Ho’oponopono.

I’m wondering when the really cool and major things are going to happen? I think I’ll keep cleaning although I will admit sometimes I wonder if “it’s” working (Laugh out loud).

Nonetheless, the cleaning has become a mantra for me (Those who have read the book know what I’m talking about). Things are alright now, and I just want more ;)

So AG whether it works or not for the mentally ill or the criminally insane I don’t know and probably won’t know for a while as in terms of “major” victories I am still waiting for a few (speaking of which I used to volunteer for a forensic psychiatric unit . . . hmmmmmm). All I can I do is continue to use “the mantra” and keep cleaning. And yes it might take a while and I think it’s better to repeat “the mantra” to myself over and over again as opposed to letting just any old random thought pop into my head (I think I also heard somewhere that thoughts become things)

Be well,

*I Love you* :-)

Seriously.
Why didn’t you try the Tibetan Book Of Death and Hare Krishnas and fasting for 60 days and ……… 20 million more things that promise untold happiness and benefits.
After all, there are plenty of testimonials for each of these things.
Amazingly, there are testimonials for contradicting approaches.
Apparently, you have used some criteria to try one thing and not another.
Well, for some peole that criteria could very well be supporting, convincing evidence. The more convincing, the more inclined you’ll be to try it.
Apparently, some people try things based on little evidence.
Believe me, there are infinite things to be tried.

Hey Joe,
I wanted to let you know that I requested for our local library to buy your book. I just recently started using the library again. You see I read so much that I couldn’t possibly buy every book that I want to read…and I don’t always want the books when I’m done with them. I have some “keepers” (like The Attractor Factor) and many I end up just giving away.

When I first went back to the library, I was discouraged at the selection, and actually asked the librarian if we had purchased any books since 1999. I know what you’re thinking… not too tactful, eh?! But to my delight she said that if there was anything I wanted to read but couldn’t find she would find it in the network for me and if there was something new I wanted they could even purchase it!

It sounds like many of the books that I would like to read will be available and I suddenly feel very wealthy! So yesterday I thought I’d test the system and see if they would look at purchasing your book. The librarian said she’d put in a purchase order for it and I’ll be notified by email when it comes to my local branch…they’ll be holding it for me!

Joe, I’ll end up buying the book anyways… but now it will be in our library as well, as a valuable community resource! How great is that! If everyone requested the book at their library perhaps we could flood our communities with the healing ho’oponopono… can you think of a better way to spend tax dollars?

Mr. Vitale,

I think the main problem with the critics is that from their point of view nothing can be as simple and as easy to use as four short phrases to change a person’s life and their world. Just another belief, a memory, that is limiting them from endless potentials.

From early on in our lives we are taught that anything we want, everything that is worth anything, takes hard work. Nothing is easy. I think that was one of my problems the first time reading ‘zero limits.’ I continued to look for the tough stuff, the hard part. I finished the book and felt like I missed something because nothing can be that easy. I went back and read it again.

I tried ho’oponopono anyway and found that it works. Some of my problems were gone right away, others need more cleaning (this is not a fast-food system) and I will keep working on them. Clean, clean, clean.

I love you, Thank you.

Joe,

Since your article first came out on this principal “all wanted more” on the secrets of the Hawaiian healing system, so it should be little surprise that people continue thirsty for more knowledge even after the book came out. After all, Joe you have been seeking the secrets of Dr. Hew Len over the past 2 years. Remember your own eagerness to spend time with Dr. Hew Len and learn more and get to the bottom, in all detail how he cured the ward of mentally ill criminals and the processes that he uses. Through your own story we learn it took you time to absorb the secret was just one action, one principal, one task.

The eagerness and determination to find out all you could about this process is how people who experience this book are also now feeling and relating to you.

Early on we get told that to fully understand Self I-dentity Ho’oponopono one needs to attend a weekend training and experience it on ones own. It is later explained that students are taught where the problems are located and how to solve different kinds of problems with over 25 problem solving process and taking really good care of oneself that are a part of this program.

But all of this does not matter unless we follow the principal task of taking full responsibility, that is being 100% responsible for all that happens in our lives.

As it is wise learning to crawl before learning to run, we need to give our minds time to strengthen with this one task. It does not stop our eagerness however to want it all and sprint to higher ground instantly.

Just as it was difficult for you to grasp at first it was speaking to the higher power and “clean, clean, clean”, the concept will be difficult to grasp for many readers which are seeking a magic bullet solution however are unwilling to try it.

I am not sure everyone sees the omissions in the book of the entire Ho’oponopono process as criticism. I see them more as a reflection of what you also experience in wanting to know more.

Hello Joe!

I had a serious problem before coming across your book. Some may say it wasn’t a big deal, but for me it was. I was “just a friend” in a sort of a love triangle…there were lots of great times but even more so times when I was really suffering because I wanted more than to be just a friend…so, when she finally broke off with her boyfriend, I was not the next choes one, but someone else. Of course it was too much to handle, so I decided to leave and go my own way completely. Now, thanks to you and Hoponopono I managed to leave her without any grudges or bad energy, which is what I would most probably do otherwise, even more so, I decided to forgive her on a daily basis and love her by wishing her all the freedom she wants..I felt liberated myself also very soon, and soon started to feel that there are so many other girls around…hmm. after a month or so, she started to send me messeges that she misses me and that I was a really important part of her life, not that she wants more from me than before, just that she knows how much I mean to her. She is still in love with that new guy..but at least Hoponopono helps me a lot in dealing with something that would tear me up otherwise…..now..I’m really interested what will happen now…I told her that I am not ready to meet him ..but I will try to send forgiveness and love to both…I’ll report what happens ;) hopefully someone new around the corner soon, Zero Limits!!! ;)

Apparently this didn’t go through the first time, so I’ll try again:

Mark -

While I am well aware of the delay potential which is a significant headache with the research process – having spent years in psych research – I think it should also be noted that far too many times, those who promote bogus programs and therapies attempt to dismiss the need for *any* empirical evidence, usually with the condescending qualifier that “the only proof anyone ever believes is their own.” If Dr. Len’s system is to be differentiated from those peddled by present-day snake oil salesmen, it needs to be able to stand up to the scrutiny of the uninitiated, as well as the converts.

My impression from AG’s comment was that he/she was looking for even one case wherein the efficacy of the process had been fully documented – not an unrealistic or unreasonable request, IMHO.

If one hopes to establish credibility for a system of beliefs or promote the viability of alternative behaviors as a means to improve the quality of life, it would seem reasonable to expect challenges. To reject those challenges out of hand by implication that the questioner is simply not sufficiently evolved, or to claim that the required proof is only obtained via acceptance of the precepts being presented effectively diminishes the credibility of the system in the mind of any individual who does not suspend reason and embrace it blindly. Perhaps it makes a “believer” feel superior to assume such a stance, but it is a disservice both to the inquisitive seeker and to the system being presented.

Dear Joe and Friends,

I just want to say, “I love you.”

Today, my focus is to love myself by healing myself. Or, to heal myself by loving myself:smile: That’s all I must do and remember.

Just a thought I’ve been pondering: Maybe we’re only open to Hooponopono when we come “from zero” or some would say “nothingness” or “rock bottom.” I recall my first AA meeting 14 years ago. I heard one message or prompt there from a fellow member, ” ALL you have to do is stay honest, open minded, and willing (H.O.W.).” Looking back, I’m certain that my bottom or state of “zero” allowed me to be present to this Divine inspiration. Ahhh…life is good.

This whole “we’ll be cleaning on you” statement from some of the posts sounds extremely arrogant and self-righteous. That is my issue of course and that is what needs clearing.

I just finished the book and while I agree with Brian’s post almost 100%, I must say that Joe did a great job in the last part of the book summarizing the whole process in a way that made many things very clear. It’s as if he took his confusion in the whole process and helped made it clear for me in a matter of minutes instead of months.

Joe,
You know, I just have to say…and I’m not the “leave a comment” type…but thanks Dude. You are right on. I’m reading Zero Limits and when I found out about it through…gosh, some email of yours, I thought YES!!!, THAT’S IT!!!!!!!! I’ve been doing the self help thing for 23 years…and sometimes when i look back through my journals I think…jesus, I haven’t come very far…the same bolony is still bothering me. And somewhere tinkering around in the back of me has been this voice saying…stop “inputing” and “take away”. Just “I love you” has made such a HUGE HUGE impact in my life…HUGE….just thanks for writing it and putting in out there and saying it over and over and over again. You know, all the “critique”…we’ll just keep cleaning on them…and actually all I think, well, feel when I read the criticism is pain…I can feel inside me how they feel …because I used to really feel that same way…and its those feelings that make them say that….and it feels so bad to be in that place. So….since it’s still “me” feeling that way…if they are…Im just cleanin’. And it feels way better to love them than be pissed at them….like I used to be. Actually, it feels WAY better to love everything and everyone ….than be pissed at it/them. Thanks Joe. Thank you Thank you Thank you. Thanks. And Thank you to Dr. Hew Len…and his hamburgers.

Ao Akua……

Since I have allowed my self to decide to be 100% responsible for everthing that I perceive to be in my life, I am so happy that I allowed you to write and publish “Zero Limits”. I have long accepted as fact the statement that “I create my own reality”, but only recently have i begun to understand the depth and breadth of that Truth. (I thank the Divine Creator that untold billions share my creative responsibility…. it would be an unbearable burden to keep all the galaxies and their individual constituents in proper relation to each other all by my self !)
In the Christian Bible one verse states simply “pray wothout ceasing”. Ihaleakala says “clean, clean, clean all the time”. Wonderful, ain’t it ? I find myself heeding Dr.Hew Len’s advice, and consciously saying mentally I’m sorry, Please forgive me, I Love You as continuously as possible. It’s a magnificent way to be awake to your existence, as opposed to letting your brain “idle” most of the time allowing programs and problems to bubble up from the subconscious and clutter up your perception of what’s really going on.
Thank you, Great Orator, and please continue…….. I know I will.

I believe Dr. Vitale is a good person and believes 100% in what he is doing. I bought his latest book “The Attractor Factor” and tried it out – so far nothing has happened. Also tried the “I love you” bit – still no results. So I am left to wonder – if something is real it should work for everybody – no exceptions. So maybe when people talk about ‘miracles’ it begs a definition of what they believe a “miracle” is.
As for me, i can only go by what works. The biggest industry in the world is the selling of “hope”. Women buy billions of dollars worth of cosmetics int the “hope” it will make them more beautiful. Religions sell “hope” of a beautiful ‘life’ after death. Politicians sell “hope” that maybe they might just do the right thing for once. Advertisers sell “hope” that if you buy their product you will feel better, make more money, take the pain away etc. etc. When i search the internet i constantly see claims that this or that product is “life changing”. Well, the only “life changing” that I see is the person making money off people’s “hope” that their life will change for the better. It’s all a matter of odds. When someone is selling something that is “life changing” or “Making a lot of money” there is always a certain small percentage of people who through sheer dumb luck or fortuitousness actually do make some money. That’s what thiese infomercial hucksters can always count on. Then they trot out these “success stories” as proof that their “system” works. But read the fine print: RESULTS NOT TYPICAL.

Hello Dr. Joe,

I have read The Attractor Factor and thought it was a great book. I’m not new to the Law of Attraction (LoA) and I still got useful material out of it. Thank you. But Zero Limits is in a different league. It is brilliant! Thank you for making an effort to introduce it to the world.

Specifically, Zero Limits brings a whole new understanding to the notion of taking 100% responsibility for one’s experiences. In addition, the method of dealing with negative energy by “cleaning” on one’s “programs” or memories is elegant and it makes perfect sense.

Having said that, according to the LoA, the energy is “dumb,” just as the gravity is “dumb.” Gravity does not care if you drop a one-month baby from the 60th floor or an apple. It treats both the same. The LoA does not care either, which explains why “bad” things happen to “good” people.

In short, energy does not discriminate. It can’t. It does not know what is “good” and what is “bad”. There is no “good” or “bad” because both are subjective human constructs. There is only energy, which matches one’s “vibrations” or intentions. As you say in Zero Limits, “the hamburger is bad only if you think it is bad.”

The “cleaning” method is powerful because it helps remove “negative” energy, whatever “negative” means to you. However, and please correct me if I’m wrong, in Zero Limits you said:

“The only choice you have, is once the thought appears is to act on it or not…You can do any number of things once the thought arises, but it is being generated in your unconscious…In order to clean the unconscious so you get better thoughts, you have to do something else.”

What does “better thoughts” mean? Better from whose perspective? According to the LoA, one should act if the thoughts are in line with what one wants. If there is interference from the “programs,” then the “cleaning” method can definitely help.

In Zero Limits, you have also said that in the Attractor Factor, you have praised the power of intention, but now you have realized that “intention is a fool’s game, an ego’s toy and that the real source of power is inspiration.”

And that “agreeing to life is a great secret to happiness, not controlling life…we are visualizing and affirming in order to manipulate the world. I now knew that isn’t necessary, you better off going with the flow while constantly cleaning what comes up.”

I beg to differ. Agreeing to life is a great secret to happiness, which is why you have taught in the Attractor Factor to let go. Did you not?

What does it mean to “manipulate the world”? Did you manipulate or “bribed” the world/universe when you gave a large tip to that waitress at the restaurant where you and Dr. Hew Len had launch?

You said that because you did that, you later on received a great money-making idea. It sure sounds like a “manipulation,” but was it? Of course not. Visualization is just a tool, like “cleaning” – which helps raise the energy level.

The real source of power is undoubtedly inspiration, but why can’t an inspiration and an intention be the same? Isn’t that the point of the LoA and the Attractor Factor anyway?

Please elaborate and thank you for your great work.

The Divine doesn’t have any of these. Clean and get back to Zero (even if only for moments here and there) and you will see. Where is the ’stuff’ to have opinion, thoughts, judgments, memories about? It doesn’t exist – it never did…REALLY!

Dr. Joe,

Thank you for your answer. I have another question if I may. In “Who’s in charge?” by Ihaleakala Hew Len, Ph.D, there is a diagram which seems to suggest that our thoughts come from the Divine and then are being processed by our conscious and subconscious minds.

But why such arrangement is necessary? What do you think about the notion that our thoughts are simply the product of our brain’s activity, just as protein synthesis is one of the necessary functions to support our body?

This theory seems to be supported by very respectable scientists such as Daniel C. Dennett and Douglas R. Hofstadter.

Thank you,
-Eugene

Eugene, some thoughts are being randomly generated as programs. The point is to go beyond them, to Zero Limits, so all you hear is inspiration.

Hello. I saw the introduction and I wondered…

Did things in the world that I didn’t know about come because it was a projection from inside me?

Also, different people probably has different inner thoughts. How can one change the world so easily simply by changing himself?

I have a friend who, as a result of a chemical inbalance, hallucinates. Does that inner vision project and make walls collapse?

If someone had an inner vision to stop terrorism, but another had one to make terrorism occur more often, who will win?

If everything is possible, then how is it that many deeds have not been accomplished by the enlightened people? (ie time travels, shapeshifting etc)

Sorry these questions may seem aggressive but it’s because I am a suspicious person.

Peace and Love, BK

Ah, the mind and its questions.

You might want to read the actual book, rather than asking me to write one here in response to your probes. :) .

All the best,
joe

Mr. Fire
It is not my favorite practice to buy a book if I am not sure of its effectiveness.

BK, just borrow it from the library.

PS – Any books effectiveness is up to you, not the book. I suggest you forget this one.

If it is such a wonderful book, why does the Disclaimer on the Zero Limits website practically say that “you’re a fool if you buy this gumpf”; and why is the Disclaimer page dated 2002–2003?

I’m extremely skeptical of both the book and its author(s).

Thank you for putting in writing this way of life. I found so many connections to the words you wrote. I have been on a spiritual journey for many years and each time I find myself drawn to a special book, I move to the next step. I love you.
